Event rules of thumb
- Baseline: 1 unit per 50 guests for about 4 hours
- Longer events: add capacity as hours increase, or schedule mid-event service
- Alcohol: about 20% more
- Heat: more water means more trips. See summer tips.
- Accessibility: at least one ADA unit per cluster for public events
- Handwashing: a station for every 3–5 toilets, plus one at each food area
Construction sites
Job sites follow OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51, not event math. The minimum is 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers. With 20 or more workers, it's 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers, and with 200 or more, it's 1 of each per 50. Layout for large events
Several small clusters beat one big one. Put restrooms near entrances, near food and drink, and at the far end of the venue, each with a handwashing station and an accessible unit. Keep clusters on firm, level ground with a clear route. Plan for the service truck to reach them for multi-day events.
