Where handwashing stations are needed
Events with food
Food vendors at temporary events in Maricopa County generally must provide handwashing facilities under county food safety rules. Guests notice too: a sink next to the restrooms and food area makes a real difference. Check with Maricopa County Environmental Services or your event organizer for specific requirements.
Construction sites
OSHA expects washing facilities on sites where workers handle concrete, paints, adhesives, lead or other contaminants. Pair stations with your job-site toilets.
Other uses
- Farmers markets, school carnivals and festivals
- Outdoor weddings and catered parties
- Agricultural and field work
- Temporary facilities during plumbing outages or renovations
How many?
A practical rule is one handwashing station for every 3 to 5 toilets at an event, plus one at each food area. On job sites, place stations beside the toilets and near areas where workers handle materials. See our calculator for restroom counts.
Heat and service
In Phoenix summers, fresh water and soap run out faster, and gray water tanks need emptying more often. For multi-day events and busy sites, plan refill service along with toilet service. More in our summer rental guide.

Do handwashing stations need a water hookup?
No. Portable stations have their own fresh-water tank and a gray-water tank. We fill them before delivery and service them as needed.
Can I rent a handwashing station without a porta potty?
Yes. Food vendors and some events rent stations on their own.
