What makes a unit ADA accessible

  • Ground-level entry with no step up
  • Wide door with an easy-to-use latch
  • Interior turning space for a wheelchair
  • Grab bars beside the toilet
  • Lower seat and fixtures within reach

When you need accessible units

Under the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, when portable toilets are clustered at a single location for public use, at least 5% of the units in each cluster, and no fewer than one, must be accessible. Units used only by construction personnel on a construction site are generally exempt. Your event permit or venue may have its own requirements. When in doubt, include one.

5% rounded up, minimum one per cluster. This is general information, not legal advice. Check with your event permit office or venue.

Placement matters as much as the unit

An accessible unit behind gravel, grass on a slope, or a row of other units isn't really accessible. Place it on firm, level ground with a clear, smooth route from parking and the main event area. Plywood or matting over soft ground can help.

Common uses

  • Public festivals, fairs and community events
  • Park and sports field events
  • Commercial job sites with visitor or inspector access (construction restrooms)
  • Weddings and parties with older guests

Common questions

How many ADA porta potties do I need?

For public events, at least 5% of the units in each cluster, and no fewer than one. A cluster of 10 standard units needs at least one accessible unit.

Are ADA units bigger?

Yes. They have a larger footprint for wheelchair turning space, so plan a bit more room at the placement spot.
